from telegraph: Officials in Moscow say they have no record of a US researcher who claims to have examined a skull fragment said to belong to the late Nazi dictator. Russia responded after a History Channel documentary claimed to have subjected the bone, which is kept in Moscow, to DNA testing and discovered it belonged to a woman and not Hitler. The program suggested its findings bolstered the theory that Hitler did not commit suicide in 1945 as is widely thought. But Vladimir Kozlov, deputy director of Russia's state archive where the fragment is stored, has cast doubt on the programme. He says he has no record that an American scientist called Nick Bellantoni who is shown in the program taking samples from the skull had ever been granted access. "Nobody with that name – Bellantoni – has been into the archive for the last four years," he told state news agency RIA Novosti. "None of the directors or people who grant permission for this kind of thing know this name."

from ap: William Safire, the conservative columnist and word warrior who feared no politician or corner of the English language, died Sunday. He was 79. The Pulitzer Prize winner died at a hospice in Rockville, Md. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer, family friend Martin Tolchin said.

Safire spent more than 30 years writing on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times. In his "On Language" column in The New York Times Magazine and more than a dozen books, Safire traced the origins of words and everyday phrases such as "straw man," "under the bus" and "the proof is in the pudding." ...

fbi releases doctored tapes of okc bombing aftermath

from ap: Long-secret security tapes showing the chaos immediately after the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building are blank in the minutes before the blast and appear to have been edited, an attorney who obtained the recordings said Sunday. "The real story is what's missing," said Jesse Trentadue, a Salt Lake City attorney who obtained the recordings through the federal Freedom of Information Act as part of an unofficial inquiry he is conducting into the April 19, 1995, bombing that killed 168 people and injured hundreds more. Trentadue gave copies of the tapes to The Oklahoman newspaper, which posted them online and provided copies to The Associated Press.

The tapes turned over by the FBI came from security cameras various companies had mounted outside office buildings near the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. They are blank at points before 9:02 a.m., when a truck bomb carrying a 4,000 pound fertilizer-and-fuel-oil bomb detonated in front of the building, Trentadue said.

"Four cameras in four different locations going blank at basically the same time on the morning of April 19, 1995. There ain't no such thing as a coincidence," Trentadue said.

He said government officials claim the security cameras did not record the minutes before the bombing because "they had run out of tape" or "the tape was being replaced."
"The interesting thing is they spring back on after 9:02," he said. "The absence of footage from these crucial time intervals is evidence that there is something there that the FBI doesn't want anybody to see."

director roman polanski arrested in switzerland

from seattlepi: Director Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland as he arrived in the country for a film festival and could be extradited to the United States to face 32-year-old charges of having sex with a 13-year-old girl, The Associated Press reported Sunday.

Polanski, director of such acclaimed films as Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown and The Pianist, was scheduled to receive an honorary award at the Zurich Film Festival. The Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement that U.S. authorities have sought the 76-year-old's arrest since 2005.

''There was a valid arrest request and we knew when he was coming,'' ministry spokesman Guido Balmer told The Associated Press. ''That's why he was taken into custody.''

The U.S. would now need to make a formal extradition request, Balmer told the AP.

The request for Polanski’s arrest wasn’t related to his failed attempt this year to have the 1977 case thrown out, she said. “It’s because he’s been a fugitive,” Robison said.... Los Angeles prosecutors made prior efforts to obtain Polanski’s arrest abroad, the latest one in July of 2007 when the director visited Israel, according to a statement posted yesterday on the district attorney’s Web site. That effort failed because Polanski left Israel before the Israeli authorities received additional details they requested, according to the statement.

The Chicago Department of Public Health says there's no sign anyone else was exposed to the bacteria. The tragic irony is that Professor Casadaban had been trying to develop a vaccine so that thousands of people around the world wouldn't die a painful, ugly death from a bacterial infection related to the plague. But it was that bacterium that appears to have killed him.

will americans obey govt orders during a swine flu pandemic?
from paul joseph watson: Local authorities are keen to know whether American citizens will obey the government in the event of an H1N1 pandemic and take the swine flu vaccine, amidst growing fears of quarantines and forced injections that have been circulating in recent weeks.

Every sign points to the fact that health authorities are preparing mass vaccination programs and quarantines that could be instituted should the H1N1 virus make a deadlier comeback, which has been all but guaranteed by U.S. health authorities as well as the WHO.

Part of those preparations include gauging the potential reaction of Americans to unpopular orders dictated by an increasingly distrusted government. How many citizens will follow orders to stay indoors, evacuate or take a shot?

Some of those questions form part of a survey being conducted by the University of Virginia’s health department targeting everyone except “federal government agencies and their employees,” who “are not qualified respondents for the survey target population,” according to an advisory sent with the survey.

The survey was forwarded to us by a reader who is part of a CEO-only networking group called MindShare in the Washington DC.

“I was sent the survey below that is probing folks in VA, MD, and Washington DC on what they would do in a pandemic or anthrax situation,” writes Etienne De La Boetie. “They appear to be trying to determine if folks will comply with government directives in either a flu pandemic or anthrax attack.”

The survey, entitled Community Shielding Shared Spectrum, was issued by the Critical Incident Analysis Group at the University of Virginia and can be read here.
