obama praises & wages war while accepting peace prize

in other news, freedom is slavery & ignorance is strength...

obama praises & wages war while accepting peace prizefrom latimes: President Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize [in Oslo] today, acknowledging the irony of winning it as a wartime president and calling his own accomplishments "slight" in comparison to past winners.

But in his speech to the Nobel Committee, Obama spoke of the concept of a "just war" and the pursuit of a "just peace," which he said sometimes depends on more than simply refraining from violence.

Lauding the commitment of past Nobel laureates to nonviolence, Obama said that, as a head of state and commander-in-chief of a military at war sworn to protect and defend his nation, he cannot follow their examples alone.

"I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people," Obama said. "For make no mistake: Evil does exist in the world. A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies. Negotiations cannot convince Al Qaeda's leaders to lay down their arms. To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism - it is a recognition of history; the imperfections of man and the limits of reason."

With his remarks, delivered in the brief sunlight of the Norwegian winter's midday, Obama answered critics who complain that he was receiving the award before he has really done anything to achieve peace.

The award also comes just days after the president announced a military buildup in Afghanistan, a surge of 30,000 U.S. troops which the White House hopes will disable the terrorist headquarters in the region and bring the eight-year war to an end.

john lennon on the myth of over-population

john lennon on the myth of over-populationfrom youtube: Yesterday was the anniversary of John Lennon’s assassination. He was not killed by a deranged fan who read it in Catcher In The Rye. He was killed for expressing opinions like the one below...

35 years ago, the big media scare was over population - we were all doomed. Then it was the coming ice age that was going to kill everyone. Now we're all going to die of global warming. Kind of typical that Lennon didn't follow the mainstream thought.

obama uses epa to declare life-giving co2 a toxic evil pollutant

from the folks who told you the air at ground zero was safe to breathe: you can drink poison & eat garbage, but that plant food you exhale must go ... and then you're next
obama uses epa to declare life-giving co2 a toxic evil pollutantfrom ap: The Obama administration took a major step Monday toward imposing the first federal limits on climate-changing pollution from cars, power plants and factories, declaring there was compelling scientific evidence that global warming from manmade greenhouse gases endangers Americans' health.

The announcement by the Environmental Protection Agency was clearly timed to build momentum toward an agreement at the international conference on climate change that opened Monday in Copenhagen, Denmark. It signaled the administration was prepared to push ahead for significant controls in the U.S. if Congress doesn't act first on its own.

The price could be steep for both industry and consumers. The EPA finding clears the way for rules that eventually could force the sale of more fuel-efficient vehicles and require plants to install costly new equipment - at a cost of billions or even many tens of billions of dollars - or shift to other forms of energy.

No analysis has been conducted by the EPA on costs of such broad regulations, although the agency put the price tag of its proposed climate-related car rules at $60 billion, with an estimated benefit of $250 billion.

kennedy calls wv mountaintop removal mining a crime

kennedy calls wv mountaintop removal mining a crimefrom ap: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Monday that mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia is a crime, and that if the American people could see it, there would be a revolution.

"We are cutting down the Appalachian Mountains, these historic landscapes where Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett roamed that are so much a part of American culture," the environmental attorney said at a rally to stop blasting on southern West Virginia's Coal River Mountain.

"It's God who made these mountains, and it's (Massey Energy chief) Don Blankenship who is cutting them down," Kennedy said.

Kennedy spoke as some 300 environmental activists cheered. At the same time, 200 coal miners jeered. The groups were kept apart by a line of state troopers and metal barricades.

The Virginia-based Massey plans to blast and mine thousands of acres atop the mountain, which has enough coal reserves to feed power plants for 14 years. Organizations including Coal River Mountain Watch and Climate Ground Zero want Massey to stick with underground mining and allow the ridges to be turned into a 200-turbine wind farm.

Before taking the stage, Kennedy waded into the crowd of shouting miners and spent a half-hour debating Massey Vice President of Surface Operations Mike Snelling and others.

"He's very passionate about what he was doing and I have to give him enough credit for walking through a crowd of a lot of people he would consider adversaries," Snelling said. "He just keeps talking about the environment and the concern for the environment and the mountains of Appalachia, and what we tried to tell him is that we are just as concerned about the mountains — or more than he is, for the fact that we live here."

The rally, held outside the state Department of Environmental Protection headquarters, was the latest of several demanding a halt to blasting on Coal River Mountain, which Massey calls contour and highwall mining, not mountaintop removal.

In mountaintop removal, forests are clear-cut. Explosives blast apart the rock, and machines scoop out the exposed coal. The earth left behind is dumped into valleys, covering intermittent streams.

Coal operators say it's the most efficient way — in some cases, the only way — to reach some reserves. They also argue they reclaim the land so it can be redeveloped. Critics say the land is ruined forever, and that people, property and the environment suffer unnecessarily.

pearl harbor: 68yrs later, all war still based on deception

Japan May Strike Over Weekend - Hilo Tribune Herald, November 30, 1941from gather: Today lives in infamy, but not for the reasons you’ve been told. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, exactly 68 years ago today, was not an unprovoked, dastardly assault on an unsuspecting nation. It was a carefully orchestrated trap, engineered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR’s purpose was to overcome domestic opposition to America’s involvement in the European war thousands of miles from the Pacific isles.

A tri-party agreement between Japan, Germany and Italy, executed one year earlier, gave Roosevelt the key he needed to get into Europe through the “back door.” The agreement stipulated that a war against any one of the parties would be considered to be a war against all three.

These facts would still be buried in the dustbin of history but for some sixteen years of work by author Robert Stinnett, uncovering and examining documents under the Freedom of Information Act. His eventual book on the subject is entitled Day of Deceit.

comcast to buy control of nbc universal in $30b transaction

comcast to buy control of nbc universal in $30b transactionfrom latimes: In a momentous shift in the balance of power of the entertainment industry, cable television giant Comcast Corp. on Thursday made it official by announcing that it was buying control of NBC Universal from General Electric Co. The proposed $30-billion transaction is the culmination of the longtime ambition by Comcast's chief executive, Brian Roberts, to transform his family-controlled Philadelphia company from a passel of distribution pipes into a leading producer of movies and TV shows and owner of prominent cable channels. The deal underscores how the high profit-margin business of cable TV - not a broadcast network or a Hollywood movie studio - has become the financial backbone of media conglomerates. "Cable channels are the best part of the media business today; they are really the crown jewels of any entertainment company," Comcast Chief Operating Officer Steve Burke told analysts in a conference call.

student to obama: legalize prostitution, gambling & drugs

but obama claims he's open to every good idea to stop job losses
from raw replay: One student in Allentown, Pennsylvania had a humorous question for the president Friday. “I was wondering if maybe if you checked out some of the statistics about legalizing prostitution, gambling, drugs and non-violent crime in order to stimulate some of the economy?” asked the second year college student. “I appreciate the boldness of your question. That will not be my jobs strategy,” Obama replied as the audience laughed. This video is from MSNBC’s Dr. Nancy, broadcast Dec. 4, 2009.

dem senate report says rumsfeld & franks let osama escape

dem senate report says rumsfeld & franks let osama escapefrom allgov: While President Barack Obama prepares to announce his decision regarding a troop increase for Afghanistan, Senate Democrats have released a report that argues that the Bush administration failed to capture Osama bin Laden when it had the chance in late 2001. The report (Tora Bora Revisited: How We Failed To Get Bin Laden and Why It Matters Today [3.1mb PDF]) pins the blame on former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the top U.S. commander at the time, General Tommy Franks, for not sending enough troops into the Tora Bora region where bin Laden was hiding and from which he eventually escaped into Pakistan. The failure to grab al Qaeda’s leader allowed him “to emerge as a potent symbolic figure who continues to attract a steady flow of money and inspire fanatics worldwide,” reads the report from the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

obamessiah: more troops, more secrecy, less change!

obamessiah: more troops, more secrecy, less change!from latimes: President Obama plans to send 30,000 to 35,000 additional soldiers and Marines to Afghanistan, U.S. officials said Monday, the largest single U.S. deployment since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The additional troops, Obama's second major escalation of the conflict this year, will bring the number of U.S. forces in Afghanistan to about 100,000. But even as he dramatically escalates the war, Obama is expected to emphasize that there are limits to the length of U.S. military involvement in the region, White House officials said, though he is not prepared to set concrete deadlines for withdrawal. Obama will announce his newest Afghan strategy in a televised speech tonight before cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

obama refuses to order release of decades-old intel docs
from allgov: Millions of secret government documents are scheduled to be declassified at the end of this year—unless President Barack Obama extends the deadline like his predecessors have done. Reports out of Washington indicate the White House is hurriedly preparing an executive order that will postpone the classified material from being revealed in order to assuage various departments unwilling to part with their secrets. Dating from World War II to the early 1980s, the documents cover foreign relations, spy operations and military activities that have remained hidden from the public. Agencies currently affected by the secret material include the CIA and the National Security Agency, as well as the departments of Justice, State, Defense, and Energy. Under current law, classified material involving more than one agency and that is 25 years old or more is supposed to be automatically released. If President Obama issues his executive order, it will mark the third time the deadline has been extended. President Bill Clinton did so in 2000 and President George W. Bush in 2003. Steven Aftergood, a specialist on government secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists, wrote on the Secrecy News blog, “If the ‘automatic declassification’ procedures that were prescribed in prior executive orders are not ‘automatic’ after all, and if binding deadlines can be extended more or less at will, then any new declassification requirements in the Obama order will be similarly subject to doubt or defiance.”

an unfortunate twitter billboard in alabama

an unfortunate twitter billboard in alabamafrom cnet: Sometimes ingenuity doesn't quite lead you to a comfortable place. The enterprising folks at WPMI TV in Mobile, Ala., decided that they should reach out on a real-time basis to their viewers. They erected a billboard, adorned it with an image of three of its most photogenic anchors, and added a live Twitter feed. The whole thing ran very smoothly, until a passing human took this photograph and sent it in to The Palmetto Scoop.

Perhaps one's first reaction would be that this image might have enjoyed a little concoction. However, Mashable has confirmed that not only is it real, but, citing the Lagniappe blog, it says WPMI-TV's general manager and news director have allegedly been suspended for a week because of this unfortunate conflagration. This all seems just slightly odd. Television and radio has always been fond of slipping in a seven-second delay just in case untoward syllables slip through the mouths of guests or, indeed, hosts. It seems that no such delay was considered for this Twitter feed.
