senate bill to turn US into battlefield, vote on #ndaa looms

s.1867 'national defense authorization act' creates police state*
from presstv: American rights activists have slammed the US Senate for gearing up to vote on a bill on Monday that would define the whole of the United States as a 'battlefield' and allow the military to arrest American citizens in their own back yard without charge or trial.

The reactions comes after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said last week thatthe senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president-and every future president - the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. The power is so broad that even US citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.”

Under the 'worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial' provision of S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which is set to be up for a vote on the Senate floor Monday, the legislation will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield,” said South Carolina's left-wing Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who supports the bill.

The bill was drafted in secret by Senators Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), before being passed in a closed-door committee meeting without any kind of hearing, the ACLU added.

This means Americans could be declared domestic terrorists and thrown in a military brig with no recourse whatsoever.

Except that section 1032(b).1 states that this does not apply or extend to U.S. Citizens, and 1032(b).2 states that it does not apply to legal aliens either except as allowed by the U.S. Constitution. So I'm not sure what all the hubub is over this.

What of these provisions? :

(b) Applicability to United States Citizens and Lawful Resident Aliens-
(1) UNITED STATES CITIZENS- The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States.
(2) LAWFUL RESIDENT ALIENS- The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to a lawful resident alien of the United States on the basis of conduct taking place within the United States, except to the extent permitted by the Constitution of the United States.

Now do you all follow what I said the last time about loosing our chance to change things if Occupy was to fail? Here we have congress about to declare all of us terrorists. What does anyone think the military will consider the Occupy participants as, or anyone else practicing their right to peacefully protest?!!

Now we run the chance of being nabbed by the military in our own yards having a BBQ. Oh but dont worry, the next higher education episode will solve all your problems and keep everything at bay so it only happens to your neighbors.

Do the same thing over and over expecting something different is the underlying definition of insane.

The Federal Government already has the means, by way of the PATRIOT Act and the Military Commisions Act, to declare American citizens to be subject to the provisions of this bill. That's why you won't see it in said bill; they've got that power already.
