mgm to remake 'red dawn' for a post-9/11 world
from wxyz: It's going to be huge! Michigan has lured some impressive projects since passing the film incentives initiative last year, like Gran Torino, Whip It, and Betty Anne Waters. But it appears the state's biggest catch to date is the re-make of Red Dawn. The memorable battle cry will soon be echoing across Michigan's landscape. Producers are also looking for some home grown talent to fill out some roles. You can find out more by emailing reddawnextras@gmail.com. Red Dawn tells the gripping story of how some midwestern teenagers fight to save their hometown from a foreign invasion. MGM's 1984 hit starred Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, and Jennifer Gray. The cast for the re-make includes Chris Hemsworth, who played George Kirk in the latest Star Trek movie. He'll take on Swayze's role of Jed Eckert, the group's unofficial leader. Eckert's hotheaded younger brother Matt, originally played by Sheen, will be brought back by Josh Peck, best know for the voice of Eddie in the Ice Age movies. And Adrianne Palicki from the Friday Night Lights TV series, will portray Toni, the scrappy character Jennifer Gray first played. Dan Bradley will direct. He was the second unit director on the Bourne Ultimatum and the Bourne Supremacy films. Ken Droz from the Michigan Film Office says the state's film incentives lured MGM here, and so did the setting. Area production companies and filmmakers are already feeling the ripple effect of Red Dawn's pre-production here. MGM will start filming the action film's re-make September 8th.
