♬Liner Notes♬: It's the last episode before we get into holiday times and possible interruption of your PUTV experience! So let's break our streak of "Way" episode titles with some "Glory Days"! Let's get a healthy holiday meal of the newest noise from Carl Barât and the Jackals, Stars, Julian Casablancas + the Voidz, The Vaselines, Mike Doughty, Justin Townes Earle, Jerry Lee freakin' Lewis and so much more!
Stars
"No One Is Lost"
'No One Is Lost'
ATO, 2014
Notes: "Canadian indie pop troupe Stars have come a long way from Set Yourself on Fire. That iconic LP hit shelves in 2004 to worldwide critical acclaim thanks to inventive melodies that got the blood rushing... Ten years later, Stars appear to have changed with the times. Singers Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell aren’t mouthing the words they told their high school loves anymore. They’re laughing at the world’s demise while they whip by on roller skates... Recorded above a defunct gay discotheque in Montreal, No One Is Lost is Stars’ most dance-heavy album to date." I've really been falling for this record lately (this is Stars third time on PUTV) and I'm superstoked to boogie down to them when they come through town in early 2015!

Damien Jurado
"Ohio" (Filous remix)
Sony Music Germany, 2014
Notes: "Austrian producer filous breathes new life (and beats) into “Ohio,” a track from iconic Seattle indie rocker Damien Jurado, originally released in the late 90’s." This original track originally appeared on DJ's 1999 record, 'Rehearsals For Departures'. And this is also Damien's fifth time on PUTV!
(@DamienJurado/@FilousMusic)
Julian Casablancas + the Voidz
"Where No Eagles Fly"
'Tyranny'
Cult, 2014
Notes: "Julian Casablancas has admitted that he is losing money by running his label Cult Records but that what the label has achieved so far is "only the beginning." The label is home to Karen O, Cerebral Ballzy and Albert Hammond Jr as well as 'Tyranny', the new album from Casablancas and his band The Voidz. 'Tyranny' was sold for just £2.28 when it was released in October, a pricing policy Casablancas says in this week's issue of NME, on newsstands and available digitally now, is "fair."" Oh! I didn't realize Cult was JC's label - we just saw Cult Records artist Har Mar Superstar last night!
(@JCandTheVoidz)
A. Sinclair
"Suit Up"
'Pretty Girls'
Dangerbird, 2014
Notes: "The former Frank Smith frontman has honed his sound as a guitarist and drummer for countless bands since he got his start playing dive bars in Boston before relocating to his current hometown of Austin, Texas. His band’s last album was a turning point for Sinclair, earning him some much-deserved attention from outlets like Paste, Magnet and MTV Hive." Last week's "How Many Ways" title track was by the Austin boys, now let's get even more!
(@aSinclairMusic)
Caribou
"Our Love"
'Our Love'
Merge, 2014
Notes: "Caribou’s...Our Love expertly blends brainy electronic impulses with tender emotional warmth. It’s one of the year’s greatest albums, which the title track further asserts... hear Dan Snaith’s gentle cooing set against liquid gurgles and a beat that seems to sigh contentedly as it glides and skitters." I love how large Caribou has been able to grow as the years go by, my bud Curt was always HUGE into Dan/Manitoba!
(@CaribouBand)
Oceaán
"Candour"
'Grip EP'
B3SCI, 2014
Notes: "Manchester-based young singer-producer Oceaán has shared a new cut taken from his forthcoming incredible sophomore four-track Grip EP out on December 8th through Chess Club (UK) and B3SCI records (US). The track is titled “Candour” and it’s an atmospheric deep piece of work dipped into a soulful soft-electro-pop ambient style, really impressive vibes from this talented boy."
(@Oceaanz)
The Great Depression
"New Salem"
'In A Starry State'
Princess, 2014
Notes: "Forget “Interstellar;” if you’re looking for a spaced-out dystopian culture fix, check out “In A Starry State,” by The Great Depression. The Cannon Falls, Minn.-based band aimed for the stars with lush orchestral arrangements and psych-disco madness on their latest release... With the single “New Salem,” The Great Depression ditch the dust bowl dance aesthetic their name suggests and and go all-out on this frenetic disco tune, complete with lyrics portraying a harsh society that tries to exorcise one of its citizens all because “she used to hit the floor.” The album’s concept, kind of a “Footloose”-meets-”Star Wars” tale of a totalitarian empire that outlaws dance and expression, is exemplified in the sounds The Great Depression creates on “In A Starry State.”"
(#TheGreatDepression)
The Vaselines
"One Lost Year"
'V For Vaseline'
Rosary, 2014
Notes: "After a 21-year absence Scottish twee-pop heroes the Vaselines returned in 2010 with their second album, Sex With An X. They didn’t take nearly so long to return the follow-up LP V For Vaselines, which is coming later this year. The band produced the new album themselves at Mogwai’s Castle Of Doom studio, and fellow Glasgow indie-poppers like Belle & Sebastian’s Stevie Jackson and Teenage Fanclub’s Frank Macdonald guest on it. First single “One Lost Year” is a fast, short, fired-up charmer; frontman Eugene Kelly has said that the Ramones inspired the new album, and you can hear it in that song."
(@The_Vaselines)
Carl Barât and the Jackals
"Glory Days"
'Let It Reign'
Cooking Vinyl, 2014
Notes: "The Jackals, Carl Barât of The Libertines' new band, have revealed their first single... 'Glory Days' can be downloaded for free now via The Jackals' website. The song was produced by Joby Ford of The Bronx and will be followed by an album in 2015, released on Cooking Vinyl. The Libertines man recruited the group via Facebook, after posting an advert for the position of drummer, bass player and rhythm guitarist that received over 1,000 applications. The new band is made up of Barât alongside new guitarist Billy Tessio, bassist Adam Claxton and drummer Jay Bone."
(@CarlBaratMusic)
Angus & Julia Stone
"Grizzly Bear"
'Angus & Julia Stone'
American/Republic, 2014
Notes: "'Angus & Julia Stone' is the self-titled, third full-length album by Australian singer-songwriter duo Angus & Julia Stone. American producer Rick Rubin helped reunite the duo and co-produced the album. Rubin said of the experience: "This album is extraordinary; Angus and Julia are truly unique musicians. They are authentic and pure people who do things from the heart. I've never worked with anyone like them before." The album is the highest-charting by the duo to date, reaching the top 10 in several countries including France, Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand." The sibling duo is keeping the family tradition alive as their parents were also a folk duo. We kicked off Episode019 with "Wooden Chair" from Angus, minus Julia.
(@AngusJuliaStone)
Jerry Lee Lewis
"Stepchild" (Bob Dylan cover)
'Rock & Roll Time'
Shangri La/Vanguard, 2014
Notes: "Rock & roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis is set to have a big year, as the 78-year-old Killer will release Rock & Roll Time, his third album in a decade, and Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story, a biography written by Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg, on October 28th... The selection of songs draws from the catalogues of Chuck Berry ("Little Queenie," "Promised Land"), Bob Dylan ("Stepchild"), Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Mississippi Kid"), Jimmie Rodgers ("Blues Like Midnight") and even a track by one of his Million Dollar Quartet buddies, Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues"), one of two songs that finds him playing guitar."
(#JerryLeeLewis)
Mike Doughty
"When the Night Is Long"
'Stellar Motel'
Snack Bar/Megaforce/RED, 2014
Notes: "Mike Doughty’s latest project is billed as an exploration of modern hip-hop. The concept is certainly apparent, but Stellar Motel is not a complete departure for Doughty. There are several songs that sound much like the rhythmic, hyper-linguistic pop we’ve come to expect from him, and those who have followed his considerable career won’t be surprised at all by the album’s hip-hop aspects. The album is often reminiscent of Gorillaz, not in overall sound, but in the way that hip-hop mayhem and atmospheric rock meet at a verbose, intellectual intersection." I got the chance to interview Mr. Doughty recently and he played a stripped-down version of this song! This is the former Soul Coughing frontman's second time on PUTV.
(@Mike_Doughty_)
Justin Townes Earle
"Burning Pictures" (Live On KUTX)
'Single Mothers'
Vagrant, 2014
Notes: "For album number five, Justin Townes Earle turns the spotlight away from himself and his legendary father–Steve Earle–and shines it on his mother. Single Mothers is an ode to Carol Ann Hunter and single mothers everywhere, but especially the ones in Nashville. Earle says that musicians’ lifestyles in Music City lead to a lot of broken homes and messed-up children, including his own childhood... With the help of members of Centro-matic–a band he saw as a teenager and has always wanted to work with since – Earle casts a critical eye on his own failings as a man. So many love songs – especially country ones – lay the blame at the feet of women. It’s refreshing to see a man own up to his faults, as Earle does on this acoustic version of “Burning Pictures,” captured live in Studio 1A." I also had the pleasure of interviewing Justin a couple months ago and after the show I was thanking him for being so cool. I told him it seemed like some bands just want to screw with the interviewer and I'll never forget what he told me in his slow, southern drawl: "I take this shit very seriously." (Oh wow, we played JTE on our very first episode and he's already got album six in the can and coming soon called, 'Absent Fathers'!)

Blitzen Trapper
"To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)" (Ryan Adams cover)
'While No One Was Looking: Toasting 20 Years of Bloodshot Records'
Bloodshot, 2014
Notes: "Twenty years ago, Nan Warshaw, Rob Miller, and Eric Babcock started Bloodshot Records to document the budding alternative country scene in their hometown of Chicago. Their first release – a compilation of local and national like-minded artists, from the Old 97′s to the Handsome Family – gave a home to roots bands that didn’t fit the “roots” mold... Ryan Adams, Neko Case, and Justin Townes Earle all called Bloodshot Records home at one point. Austinites like Alejandro Escovedo, Rosie Flores, and Scott H. Biram were also scooped up into the label’s orbit. Two decades later, Bloodshot is celebrating their birthday with a bang... Andrew Bird, Chuck Prophet, Ted Leo, Shakey Graves, Ben Kweller, Shinyribs, and Samuel Fogarino of Interpol all appear on the compilation, tackling a wide range of songs. And today, we’re turning the spotlight on Blitzen Trapper, fellow rootsy outsiders who cover Ryan Adams’ classic “To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High).”" This is the third time on PUTV for this PDX band.
