♬Liner Notes♬: It's quickly becoming not only my favorite - but also the most pertinent - quote from the Beastie Boys: "I've been through many times In which I thought I might lose it / The only thing that saved me Has always been music". My heart goes out those affected by this week's tragedies (and who wasn't, really?) and I hope you won't let the media manipulate your emotions. Now, having said that, let's get down to business: Legends like John Cale and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion plus Devotchka, Purity Ring, The Purrs, Lord Huron and much more... So now more than ever: Let's sit back, put on our headphones and Pump Up Tha Volume!

John Cale
"Hemingway"
'Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood'
Double Six, 2012
Note: The Quietus says that "In a year that has seen excellent offerings from elder statesmen and women, such as Patti Smith, Paul Weller and Michael Gira, John Cale's Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood puts in a similarly superb argument for the year belonging to those who continue to make good and intriguing music against pop's fetishising of youth."

PAPA
"Put Me To Work" single
self-released, 2012
Note: "Papa is an outfit built around songwriters Daniel Presant and Darren Weiss, a multi-instrumentalist who also served as the drummer for Girls. So it’s somewhat fitting that on the day that ex-Girls frontman Christopher Owens announced his own solo debut Lysandre, Weiss comes through with the rich new single to his own project. It’s called “Put Me To Work” and it’s a big, warm, piano-and-organ-led rocker. Download it below."
(More Info)

Lord Huron
"Time To Run"
'Lonesome Dreams'
IAMSOUND, 2012
Note: Joining the small ranks of those three-peat performers here on PUTV (Episodes023/025), Consequence Of Sound says "Lord Huron’s Ben Schneider hails from Michigan and lives in Los Angeles, but he seems to have been everywhere. His impressionistic, world-bent Americana plays out like a foggy map of the earth, cluttered with pins and photos to mark the various places that inform it."
(More Info)

Kylie Auldist
"Counting On You"
'Still Life'
Tru Thoughts, 2012
Note: The Beeb says "If this were an old vinyl LP, its second side would be the best. The opening rush of songs here finds Australian singer Kylie Auldist at her most commercially targeted, aiming first for the radio tantalisers. And such talk of vinyl is highly appropriate, as most of Auldist’s third solo album is dedicated to the invocation of classic 1960s and early-70s soul styles, though more Holland-Dozier-Holland than hardcore Stax Records."

The Purrs
"Rotting on the Vine"
'Rotting On The Vine / You, The Medicine & Me' single
Fin, 2012
Note: Their own label says "The Purrs are not your typical Northwest psych outfit... they delicately and expertly walk that tightrope of psych and pop with swirling hints of shoegaze bubbling up to the surface. On their new 7", "Rotting On The Vine" [FIN-LE7-058] The Purrs present a sweet hint of what is coming down the pike in their upcoming full length "The Boy With Astronaut Eyes" and clearly it is not to be missed."
(More Info)

Sera Cahoone
"Naked"
'Deer Creek Canyon'
Sub Pop, 2012
Note: Amazon says "Deer Creek Canyon, Sera Cahoone's third solo album, sees her ruminating on the gravitational pull of home. Titled for the Colorado canyon where she came of age, Deer Creek Canyon was recorded in 2012 at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, Wash... She released her solo debut in 2006, and her widely acclaimed SubPop debut Only as the Day Is Long in 2008."

Jake Bugg
"Two Fingers"
'Jake Bugg'
Mercury, 2012
Note: "Two Fingers" is the fifth single from the self-titled debut album by English singer-songwriter Jake Bugg. The Guardian says "The story goes that 18-year-old Jake Bugg – born Jacob Kennedy – picked up an acoustic guitar a few years ago and found himself writing songs in the urban-troubadour mould of Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie... Instead of heeding a friend's advice to audition for Britain's Got Talent, he plugged away at small gigs until he caught the attention of a label. Before you could say "shades of Lonnie Donegan", he was No 1 in the album chart, and being touted as the antidote to manufactured pop."

Chaos Chaos
"Winner"
'S' EP
self-released, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "When Seattle sisters Asy and Chloe Saavedra were a few years younger, they comprised the piano-pop duo Smoosh, but after three albums and a few years touring the local and festival circuits, the duo were ready for some change. Now based in Brooklyn and known as Chaos Chaos, the sisters have traded in the piano and acoustic drum kit for a set of sharp synths and array of electronic percussion, and as cliche as it may sound, their music as more mature than ever."
(More Info)

Purity Ring
"Lofticries"
'Shrines'
4AD, 2012
Note: Somewhat strangely, Consequence of Sound says "Edmonton, Alberta duo Purity Ring unlocks something primordial and ancient with keycards and retina scanners... it manipulates two elements to make something malleable, elusive, sexual. It’s also legitimately one of the only albums that I can both sleep and run to." We last heard way back on Episode013 when 'Shrines' was first released.

The Moth & The Flame
"Home"
'The Moth & The Flame'
self-released, 2011
Note: I had a hard time finding much out about the band, so here's what the University of San Diego's radio station blog says "If such a thing still exists, The Moth and the Flame (TMATF) is art rock. From the carefully crafted tracks on their six-track, self-titled, debut album to the 20-foot-tall anthropomorphic giants used in promoting their symbolic 11/11/11 album release, the Provo, Utah rockers demonstrate a keen eye and ear for aesthetics."
(More Info)

DeVotchka
"How It Ends"
'Live with the Colorado Symphony'
Cicero, 2012
Note: Hey Reverb says of this live album recorded at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre that "DeVotchKa integrated seamlessly into the CSO’s big, beautiful sound. Perhaps partly due to frontman Nick Urata’s aptitude for film scoring, the band matched the CSO..."
(More Info)

Still Pacific
"Speeding To My Death"
'Cage Heart Hammer'
Still Pacific, 2012
Note: This Minneapolis quartet makes self-described "catchy melodic dark power pop."
(More Info)

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
"Get Your Pants Off"
'Meat and Bone'
Mom & Pop, 2012
Note: Pitchfork gets us up to date: "When the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion returned to the stage two years ago after a six-year layoff, their mission was philosophically simple, if physically demanding: They just had to live up to their reputation as the perpetually sweat-soaked band that showed the 90s American indie underground how to get down. And as that 2010 reunion tour-- which coincided with extensive reissues of the band's 90s-era catalog-- continued to rack up positive notices well into 2011, there was little doubt that, even well into their 40s, frontman Jon Spencer, guitarist Judah Bauer, and drummer Russell Simins still possessed the stamina of their twentysomething selves." I saw JSBX on the Fourth of July Summerstage concert at Central Park in Manhattan in 1999. Roc Raida (filling in for a canceled Mix Master Mike) and Luscious Jackson opened up for them. I have some black-and-white photos that I took, remind me to show you sometime...
(More Info)

FF
"Dusted"
'DEMO'
self-released, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says this indie Seattle band "describe themselves as “shoegaze-y punk”, which should bring smiles to some of your faces. This year the indie scene saw a lot of new shoegaze and a lot of dazed bands with dark sunglasses that loved namedropping My Bloody Valentine for street cred. But thank God, FF is not one of those bands." They've also already released another EP!
