♬Liner Notes♬: It's a holiday weekend, so what better time to have your "Cake And Eat It"?! We've got big boys like David Gray, Joe Henry and Andrew Bird - great girls like Alice Boman and Hollie Cook - underground legends like Brian Jonestown Massacre and Nightmares On Wax + all the other noise you need to know on PUTV!
Brian Jonestown Massacre
"Vad Hände Med Dem?"
'Revelation'
A Recordings, 2014
Notes: "The Brian Jonestown Massacre are now on their 14th album. And it's not so much a Revelation, more a reaffirmation of their cult status. Anton Newcombe's staunch adherence to a 60s psych aesthetic means repetitive songs with tambourines to the fore, all swathed in a musty reverb and his fey, wasted vocal recalling fellow indie survivor Stephen Pastel. Notwithstanding these strict parameters, there's much to enjoy: opening track Vad Hände Med Dem marries the juddering sound of the 13th Floor Elevators to the groove of the Velvet Underground's What Goes On..."

Wand
"Flying Golem"
'Ganglion Reef'
God?/Drag City, 2014
Notes: "It’s fitting that Los Angeles-based four-piece Wand is signed to Ty Segall’s Drag City imprint God? Records. Both artists make music that hearkens back to the ’60s and ’70s, which beam with psych-tinged guitar riffs. But whereas Segall shreds with abrasive and reckless energy, Wand charms with infectious hooks and sugary psychedelia. These are especially abound on the band’s new song “Flying Golem”. The lead single off their forthcoming album Ganglion Reef, which is out August 26th, “Flying Golem” bursts with colorful, kaleidoscopic guitars and bubbly vocals. Listen for the Kinks-inspired melodies and stay for the thundering lead guitars."

People Get Ready
"Rainbow"
'Physiques'
Brassland, 2014
Notes: "This summer, the experimental [Brooklyn] rock band People Get Ready will put out their new album, Physiques, from which we’ve already heard the title track (and seen the song’s modern-dance-filled video). Now you can listen to the newest single, “Rainbow,” which is even more unpredictable than its predecessor, especially in its constant flurry of vocals and crashing drums." We heard from PGR back on Episode036 of PUTV.

Cymbals Eat Guitars
"Jackson"
'LOSE'
Barsuk, 2014
Notes: "New York indie rockers Cymbals Eat Gutiars will release their third studio album, LOSE, on August 26th via Barsuk Records. The follow-up to 2011′s Lenses Alien spans nine tracks and was produced by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth). According to a press release, the album is centered around themes of personal loss, as frontman Joseph D’Agostino attempted to deal with the sudden death of friend and frequent collaborator Benjamin High." Don't tell PUTV alums Liars, but CEG's new album art looks familiar, kinda sorta...

Nightmares on Wax
"Da Feelin"
'N.O.W. Is The Time'
Warp, 2014
Notes: "Nightmares On Wax's N.O.W. Is The Time, a compilation featuring original tracks alongside remixes from the likes of JD Twitch, Morgan Geist and LFO... George Evelyn is one of Warp Records' longest serving artists. His last album was 2013's Feelin' Good, and this next release is a compilation that marks his 25-year career—which coincides with Warp's own 25-year celebrations." "Master Plan" from 2013's 'Feelin' Good' was our title track back on Episode081.
(@NightmaresOnWax)
Alice Boman
"Over"
'EP II'
Control Group, 2014
Notes: "When you see stories about Alice Boman, a singer-songwriter from Malmö, Sweden, you’ll almost always read that she never intended to release the five songs on her 2013 debut EP, Skisser. Hearing them in all their quiet power and loveliness, you can understand why this fact is so hard for people to get over. If the world never knew about Alice or her music, we would all truly and sadly be missing out. On June 3, she releases a new collection of songs on EP II, including “Over,”" We also heard "Be Mine" from 'EP II' back on Episode113.

Andrew Bird
"Giant of Illinois" (Live On KUTX)
'Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of…'
Virtual Label, 2014
Notes: "Though he’s known for his experimental live performances – mixing loops, drum machines, and, of course, whistling – at heart Andrew Bird is a consummate folk musician... The past few albums have found the singer stripping away some of the studio trickery that surrounded his earlier releases. His latest record, Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of…, is a collection of songs written by the Handsome Family, fellow Chicagoans who also ran in the alt-country scene of the mid-90s. In a recent performance and interview in Studio 1A...Bird and his band (which includes the sublime Tift Merritt on vocals and guitar and Alan Hampton on bass and vocals) played around a single microphone, like they did in the old days." This is Bird's third appearance on PUTV...
(@AndrewBird)
Ben Kweller
"Full Circle" (Live on KUTX)
'Go Fly a Kite'
Noise Co., 2011
Notes: "Ben Kweller hit it big as a teenager, first with his Dallas band Radish and then with his 2001 solo debut Sha Sha. Everyone from the Lemonheads to Wilco to (old family friend) Nils Lofgren took a liking to Kweller’s brand of alt-rock. Over the years, though, Kweller has evolved into a compelling songwriter comfortable with folk, piano pop, and even country (as on 2009′s honky-tonk curveball Changing Horses)... For today’s song of the day, we’re returning to Kweller’s 2012 Studio 1A performance of “Full Circle,” which, as the title suggests, sums up Kweller’s stellar career with a country-pop flourish."
(@BenKweller)
Wussy
"Teenage Wasteland"
'Attica!'
Shake It, 2014
Notes: "The Cincinnati band, which formed over a dozen years ago when then Ass Ponys frontman Chuck Cleaver convinced current Wussy co-leader Lisa Walker to join him on stage for a “solo” show, write and perform songs so good that critics no less than the Village Voice’s esteemed Robert Christgau declare them to be “the best band in America”."
(@WussyMusic)
David Gray
"Cake And Eat It"
'Mutineers'
Good Soldier, 2014
Notes: "David Gray’s 1998's last chance saloon career high White Ladder remains the biggest-selling album in Irish history. Its canny marriage of organic singer-songwriter angst and machine beats launched a whole sub genre of lonely boys tinkering with laptops and loops late at night. Since then Gray has valiantly tried to create wide open space between that multi-million seller and his next move. Rarely has he come near to White Ladder’s giddy inventiveness. However, on his tenth album he may have found his new Clune (the hyperactive drummer who gave that album so much of its whack) in the form of Andy Barlow of neglected nineties trip hoppers Lamb."
(@DavidGray)
Joe Henry
"Lead Me On" (w/ Lisa Hannigan)
'Invisible Hour'
Work Song, 2014
Notes: "[Madonna's brother-in-law Joe Henry's] first studio collection in almost three years...[is] an emotionally raw, folk-rooted ballad of romantic and spiritual yearning that reflects much of the album’s unfussy production... "'Lead Me On,’ in particular, is one of the most stripped-down things on the album," said Henry... The song, which features harmony vocals by Irish musician Lisa Hannigan, also has musical echoes of vintage folk-country music" He wrote, recorded and released 'Invisble Hour' all on his own, which rules. What doesn't rule, however, is that this isn't the Loretta/Conway song...
(@JoeHenryMusic)
Hollie Cook
"Looking for Real Love"
'Twice'
Mr Bongo, 2014
Notes: "Hollie Cook's 2011 self-titled debut was a slightly lightweight but ultimately enjoyable and modern collection of lovers rock. For her less conventional-sounding follow-up, she and producer Prince Fatty have beefed up the basslines, giving her tropical pop songs a dubby atmosphere... and the minor classics keep on coming: 'Tiger Balm', 'Looking For Real Love' and the string-heavy title track."
(@HollieCookie)
Beat Connection
"Hesitation" single
self-released, 2014
Notes: "“Hesitation” marks Beat Connection’s third KEXP Song of the Day... The three mark very distinct milestones for the band, now half a decade into their career and on the cusp of playing the main stage at Capitol Hill Block Party for the second time. Birthed out of a love for nu-disco and the indie electronic scene of the late 2000s, Beat Connection helped usher in a new era for the Seattle electronic scene." And we heard Beat Connection back on Episode006!
