♬Liner Notes♬: We're back home and back for a full-on PUTV episode with Latin flavors, shoegazey layers and thumping 21st century electronic rock... Let's do this thing!
Gipsy Kings
"Samba Samba"
'Savor Flamenco'
Knitting Factory, 2013
Note: We begin with the band that signed "to Knitting Factory Records for new album SAVOR FLAMENCO - released in the US on September 10th 2013. This album will be their first new recording in 7 years and marks the band's 25th anniversary. The French group, indeed France's most successful group of all time, are well known for bringing their progressive and virtuosic flamenco pop to the mainstream"

Holy Ghost!
"Dumb Disco Ideas"
'Dynamics'
DFA, 2013
Note: Much like Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, James Murphy, the man behind the late, great LCD Soundsystem has moved behind the boards. He produced some arcade band's new record and now he's behind this epic on his own DFA records! "Holy Ghost! makes a sneaky return to the indie disco marketplace with this eight-minute elastic dancefloor odyssey. “Dumb Disco Ideas” plays like a history of the DFA studio sound: dry drums, two-note bass line, percussion, hand claps, arrangements with unexpected sounds dashing from side to side. But Holy Ghost! takes all of these ideas and influences and flips them into one of their greatest achievements—a wholly original song featuring some of their most sophisticated production come to life."

FAIRCHILD
"Dancer"
'FAIRCHILD'
self-released, 2013
Note: "Initially formed in 2005 as Fairchild Convention, Gold Coast’s FAIRCHILD create unabashedly grand, electronic rock music that evokes the current generation of UK stadium stars... Like a fellow group of Aussies who [Cut Copy] captured the emotional spectrum of a dancefloor a few years ago, “Dancer” is a nuanced, strikingly evocative tune that reveals a little more soul with every synth note."

Howe Gelb
"The 3 Deaths of Lucky"
'The Coincidentalist'
New West, 2013
Note: You might remember him from such bands as Giant Sand... "Howe Gelb has returned with The Coincidentalist, a transfixing collection of songs steeped in the dusty and discerning Americana he first began experimenting with more than 30 years ago. It will be released November 5 on his new label home New West Records... Gelb is the principle vocalist and also plays guitar, piano and chimes and is joined on the album by an ensemble cast of musicians featuring M. Ward on guitar, former Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley... Scottish singer KT Tunstall (whose most recent album Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon was co-produced by Gelb), Will Oldham, violinist Andrew Bird, and pedal steel guitarist John Rauhouse..."

Soft Metals
"Tell Me"
'Lenses'
Captured Tracks, 2013
Note: "The Los Angeles-via-Portland duo of Patricia Hall and Ian Hicks compose art-damaged electronic music under the moniker Soft Metals... “Tell Me” is an alluring fever dream of a track that juxtaposes Hall’s smooth vocals over metallic synths, resulting in a dancefloor haze that’s hard to deny... “Tell Me” is a rare thing: a four-on-the-floor electro burner that’s easy to get lost in, even if a dancefloor isn’t handy."
(More Info)
Jeremy Messersmith
"Tourniquet"
'Heart Murmurs'
Glassnote, 2013
Note: "While the charming local (MPLS) singer's song doesn't employ quite the same level of overt angst as the other two, this new single is a definite departure. After this champion of marriage equality signed with powerhouse label Glassnote Records (Mumford & Sons, CHVRCHES) earlier this year, this is the first output from a new era of Messersmith. The song is expected to appear on his next album, Heart Murmurs."

Basia Bulat
"Tall Tall Shadow"
'Tall Tall Shadow'
Secret City, 2013
Note: "I started listening to the title song of "Tall Tall Shadow," Basia Bulat's new CD, and I heard a kind of bruised purity. The walking rhythm was clever. The production was crisp. But there are a gazillion female singer-songwriters with straight blonde hair and sweet voices, and the odds that any of them will break out of the pack are small. I was at the 1:40 mark of "Tall Tall Shadow," about to eject the CD, when the song shifted gears. Bruised purity became passion --- the song became instantly personal. The voice I'd thought perhaps too pretty turned urgent: "You're running away/but the shadow is your own." And then I had to listen to all ten of the songs on "Tall Tall Shadow." "

Diego Garcia
"Thoughts of You"
'Paradise'
Concord, 2013
Note: "Argentine transplant Diego Garcia grew up stateside with a heavy dose of Latin music at home. Paradise, his sophomore release as a solo artist is a captivating recording recalling romantic ballads of the 70's with a twist, as they are sung in English."
(More Info)
Julianna Barwick
"One Half"
'Nepenthe'
Dead Oceans, 2013
Note: "Julianna Barwick’s ethereal, elliptical soundscapes are as emotionally moving as they are fascinatingly constructed. Born in Louisiana, Barwick first gained a penchant for singing in her local church. After discovering loop pedals, Barwick began composing songs based around recorded sections of her voice next to minimal piano melodies into swirling towers of song."
(More Info)
Johnathan Rice
"Nowhere At The Speed Of Light"
'Good Graces'
SQE, 2013
Note: "Similar in style and cadence to I'm Having Fun Now, his 2010 collaboration with longtime collaborator/ significant other Jenny Lewis, Laurel Canyon-based singer/songwriter Johnathan Rice's rootsy, jangle pop-tinged third solo outing cruises on by like a retired muscle car on a sunset drive, but there's a darkness to Good Graces that suggests a long and difficult journey filled with overcast days and stormy nights."
(More Info)
Dr. Dog
"The Truth"
'B-Room'
ANTI-, 2013
Note: "Dr. Dog has been reliable for quite some time when it comes to churning out hook-filled albums, and B-Room is another win for the Philadelphia-based band. The psychedelic-folk feel that the group has come to be known for is present and accounted for with an apparent rejuvenated energy behind it." This is the eighth record from the band that gives us our title track this week.
(More Info)
Chambermaids
"Electric Sky"
'Whatever Happened Tomorrow'
Old Blackberry Way/Guilt Ridden Pop, 2013
Note: With their third record, this MPLS band "have created a strong, pulling album that equally utilizes the merits of both lush, thick soundscapes and sparse, haunting melodies. Complex textural fragments that recall ambient Eno and MBV are set alongside noisy yet minimal pop songs a la The Vaselines or The Breeders."
(More Info)
Stepkids
"The Art of Forgetting"
'Troubadour'
Stones Throw, 2013
Note: It's the second record from the self-described "Hop Hippies" from Brooklyn. "Vintage yacht-funk jazz odysseY... a dynamite listen. The song structures here are fantastic... crowd-movers, which manage to retain the experimental edge that defines the Stepkids’ music, packed into potent pop."
(More Info)
Typhoon
"Dreams of Cannibalism"
'White Lighter'
Roll Call, 2013Note: And so we end with the band that kicked off Episode074, it's more from Portland's 10+ member of heavenly ruckus-bringers: Typhoon! "Formed in 2005 in Salem, Oregon, the 11-piece band Typhoon, now residing in Portland, has already amassed a number of accolades... Plus, with four LPs, two EPs and a 7″ already in the bag, the band is as prolific as it is large. “Dreams of Cannibalism” weaves the feel of a number of styles of songwriting. It opens with big, bright horns, which disappear into heavy-yet-jaunty pianos."
