♬Liner Notes♬: Last week we were 'Swimming With Sharks' and no we're gonna 'Stare At The Sun' w/ returns visits from Edward Sharpe, Pond, Eleanor Friedberger, and Bassnectar + Bass Drum of Death, Sebadoh, Moondoggies and more... Let's Pump Up Tha Volume!
Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zero
"Better Days"
'Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zero'
Community / Vagrant, 2013
Note: Returning for the second week in a row and the fourth time overall, the 10 piece Los Angeles collective brings the lead track from their brand new self-titled record. Pretty Much Amazing says, "Frontman Alex Ebert describes the songs on the album as some of the “rawest, most liberated, most rambunctious stuff we’ve done.” Maybe more discerning fans will be able to point out the raw and liberated rambunctiousness out of this one. To our ears, “Better Days” sounds simultaneously like a religious procession and a backdoor porch lament."

Azymuth
"Crazy Clock" (LTJ X-perience remix)
'Aurora'
Far Out, 2013
Note: "Since 1975, the Brazilian trio Azymuth has lead the charge when it comes to "crazy samba." Far Out Recordings commissioned excellent producers to remix their standout recording Aurora, and we're happy to offer the track "Crazy Clock," remixed by LTJ Experience..."

Bass Drum Of Death
"Shattered Me"
'Bass Drum Of Death'
Innovative Leisure, 2013
Note: KEXP says this track "is just about as good as it gets on Bass Drum of Death. Starting with a machine gun snare and a murderous guitar hook, “Shattered Me” kicks into a signature Barrett cut. He hides a great production mix and balance under a shrill lo-fi treble to keep in garage vogue, but really, this track is pure, summery, indie pop magic."

Solar Year
"Seeing The Same"
'Waverly'
Ceremony, 2013
Note: The Fader says, "Montreal’s Solar Year will reissue a revamped, remastered version of their debut album, Waverly, on June 25th via Ceremony. “Seeing the Same” is the last track we’ll hear till then, its synths sounding something like sine waves in a funhouse—bending, flopping and winking back."

Sebadoh
"Keep The Boy Alive"
'The Secret' EP
Joyful Noise, 2013
Note: Sweet, another legend added to the PUTV roster! KEXP says, "A track from the band’s first studio release of 2013 - the full-length Defend Yourself arrives on September 17th - “Keep the Boy Alive” sports a relatively more layered production than the group’s definitive material, but it’s no less lively. Propelled by double-time drums in the chorus and Barlow’s resonating lower register, “Keep The Boy Alive” shows the trio to as focused as ever; like most of the band’s catalog, “Keep The Boy Alive” is loose and rough, but even more triumphant because of it."
(More Info)
Quentin Quatro
"Disco Quatro" (Psychemagik Remix)
Insect Queen, 2013
Note: KCRW says, "DJ/Producer Ursula 1000 started his own label and his first signing is cosmic nu-disco artist Quentin Quatro." And Golden Scissors says, "As for Psychemagik’s remix, well, it’s another great production work. They capture the distinctive synth sounds of the original and make it their own, releasing that seductive Italian vocal as breakers that flow through the ups and downs of the song"

Bad Cop
"My Dying Days"
'The Light On EP'
Jeffery Drag, 2013
Note: "Adam is 15 years old, and the instructors at the boarding school, where he's been sent are forcing him to do this in order to 'teach him a lesson.' This is the origin of Bad Cop, the group Moult founded as an escape from the horror show of his teenage day-to-day at the grim Hidden Lake Academy.' The teachers at the school realized that one of the things that pacified me was letting me have a guitar for a couple of hours a day,'he explains. 'So that's where I started writing some of our first songs.' A new confidence illuminates the group's latest. ' The Light On EP'. Produced by Cage the Elephants Brad Shultz, it's a bright, vibrating effort full of high-wattage guitars and jittery rhythms and, beneath it all, that palpable sense of anarchy." And we thank them for the tweet love, too!

Pond
"Giant Tortoise"
'Hobo Rocket'
Modular, 2013
Note: Pond was on our very first episode of PUTV! KEXP says, "Emerging out of the current wave of Australian psych rock, Pond’s loose, energetic take on the movement reflects the group’s constantly fluctuating membership and shifting mentality. Formed by Tame Impala members... Earlier this year, Allbrook left Tame Impala to focus on Pond (he was replaced by Pond/The Growl member Cam Avery), resulting in the release of this month’s Hobo Rocket and a second, in-the-works album titled Man, It Feels Like Space Again. “Giant Tortoise” doesn’t have the slow chug that its title or spiritual cousin would suggest, but it is heavy, in an spontaneous, frenetic way. Calm, nearly whispered verses give way to searing guitar leads"

Volcano Choir
"Comrade"
'Repave'
Jagjaguwar, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says, "Whether he was tossing back some brewskis with the Shouting Matches, in it during the Yeezus sessions, trading notes with Alicia Keys, or working with Kathleen Edwards, Justin Vernon has worked very hard to prove he's having too much fun with his friends to work on a third Bon Iver album, and the new Volcano Choir album, Repave (out out September 3 in the U.S. and September 2 internationally via Jagjaguwar), drives that point home... "Comrade" gets crystal clear and modern, widescreen and HD, using verdant, arena-ready power balladry as a jumping off point rather than a logical extreme."

Editors
"A Ton Of Love"
'The Weight Of Your Love'
PIAS, 2013
Note: Contact Music says the Birmingham UK band "debuted their new single, 'A Ton Of Love'...on Radio One as Zane Lowe's 'Hottest Record In The World'...taken from the band's fourth studio album... Recorded mostly live, it contains their most direct songs to date and also features extra production from Clint Mansell..."

Eleanor Friedberger
"Stare At The Sun"
'Personal Record'
Merge, 2013
Note: Oh, Eleanor put your boots on! Last heard on Episode062, the part-time Fiery Furnace returns with another track from her second solo record. NPR says, "One major source of pleasure in the music makes as half of is a matter of sheer density — the density of The Fiery Furnaces' musical ideas, the thick layers of words, lyrics that operate as dense sounds with meaning to be extracted from them. By contrast, the music and lyrics Friedberger has crafted for the aptly titled Personal Record aren't of lighter weight — as an artist, she's never a lightweight — but these new songs possess a buoyancy that can belie the words."

Step Rockets
"Kisser" single
self-released, 2013
Note: Indie Shuffle says, "Minnesota quartet Step Rockets...kept a very low profile since starting out last year, but that’s all about to change with the release of “Kisser,” their second single. I’m absolutely loving the synth work on this anthemic rock track. In fact, that’s exactly what got me to listen to this single in its entirety. “Kisser” is bound to catch a few listeners off guard with it’s powerful delivery and the lead singer’s sultry tone."
(More Info)
Nina Simone
"Feeling Good" (Bassnectar remix)
'Verve Remixed: The First Ladies'
Verve, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW notes "There is no shortage of Nina Simone remixes, but Bassnectar's rendition of the classic "Feeling Good" is pure ambrosia..." "Verve Remixed: The First Ladies features tracks by legendary female artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Marlena Shaw, Astrud Gilberto and Sister Rosetta Tharpe also have timeless songs included on the record. "
(More Info)
Moondoggies
"One More Chance"
'Adios I’m a Ghost'
Hardly Art, 2013
Note: KEXP breaks it down about our Pacific Northwest closer this week. "Folk rock has received a breath of fresh air from Washington-grown “folk with dirt on it” quartet The Moondoggies. The plaid clad, low key band just released their third album... The Moondoggies opted to record their album at the family-owned Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, WA. The secluded, barn style studio seems fitting for the thoughtful vibe of the album... incorporate diverse influences like Nirvana, JJ Cale, Blonde Redhead and Pink Floyd, crafting a unique yet familiar sound. Artfully combining sincerity and triviality, The Moondoggies’ “One More Chance” skirts the line of sounding like a lost Bandfinger track or the theme song of a campy 70′s sitcom."
