♬Liner Notes♬: Go Jimmy, it's my birthday! So I invited Beck, Daughn Gibson, Edward Sharpe, The Ericksons + Washed Out, Weed, Woods and much more...

Man Man
"Head On"
'On Oni Pond'
Anti-, 2013
Note: And we begin with the Philly folks known as Man Man. Pitchfork says, "On September 10, Anti- will release their new album On Oni Pond. Like the band's 2011 album Life Fantastic, it was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit)... In a press release, Honus Honus said, "This is a strange and beautiful record but it’s also head on and fearless. It's not a record that's going to flirt with you, this is a record that's asking you out. If you get into bed with us there's going to be a relationship.""

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
"Country Calling"
'Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros'
Community / Vagrant, 2013
Note: Consequence of Sound says, "Alex Ebert, or perhaps his messianic alter ego Edward Sharpe, has a thing for magic. This intangible element follows the 35-year-old and his 10-person troupe of modern-day flower children as they continue their pilgrimage, currently in its sixth year, to unfurl joy, peace, harmony, what have you, on audiences around the world.... [With] the clattering and twangy “Country Calling”, an anthem for anyone whose planted themselves in a city only to long for the road, and the success of Edward Sharpe manifests."

Daughn Gibson
"The Sound of Law"
'Me Moan'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: Making his fourth(!) appearance on PUTV, we last heard from former trucker turned Sub Pop fucker on Episode066. KEXP says this song "kicks Me Moan off with a bang. A machine gun marching snare and a no nonsense southern guitar hook lead the record towards treacherous, unfamiliar horizons within the first thirty seconds. Gibson’s signature vocal technique serves as the cloaked, cowboy muse that beckons the track forward." OK, I've been diggin' the hell out of this record on Spotify... enough so that my partner said, "What is this?"

Deer Tick
"The Dream's In The Ditch"
'Negativity'
Partisan, 2013
Note: Ol' Rolling Stone says, "It's been awhile since rowdy Rhode Island rockers Deer Tick released a record – Divine Providence was issued in 2011, though they did offer up the Tim EP last year. On September 24th, they'll dispatch a new full-length, Negativity, on Partisan Records. Now you can take an exclusive first listen to the album cut "The Dream's in the Ditch," a cut with a cheery, sun-drenched folk disposition (complete with a tittering, twinkling piano solo) that belies the road-weary distress in frontman Ian O'Neil's lyrics."

Hot Chip
"Jelly Babies"
'Dark & Stormy' EP
Domino, 2013
Note: Also marking their fourth time on PUTV(!), the British boys are already following up last year's full-length with the new 'Dark & Stormy' EP. Music Direct says that "Somewhere along the path of their current campaign supporting 2012's In Our Heads, the latest album from Hot Chip, something magical has happened. We’re reminded of New Order, on the cusp of unfathomable mainstream success, defying convention by filling outdoor amphitheaters without the aid of mainstream radio and MTV (okay with a little bit of help from Echo And The Bunnymen)."

Woods
"Be All, Be Easy"
'Be All, Be Easy/God’s Children'
Woodsist, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode032, the Brooklyn band now has a new 7" just out. KEXP says, "Formed in Brooklyn in 2005, the psychedelic-tinged folk outfit Woods was originally little more than a project for songwriter Jeremy Earl’s home recordings, but the project grew, and by 2009, Woods had grown into a fully-fledged band... The A-side of their most recent standalone single, “Be All, Be Easy” is as gentle and breezy as its title suggests. Leaning slightly more towards a country-rock slant than Woods’ previous work, the breezy tune is straightforward, but never too conventional, surrounding its laid-back rhythm with cleverly mixed vocals and light atmospherics."

Pure Bathing Culture
"Dream The Dare"
'Moon Tides'
Memphis Industries/Partisan, 2013
Note: The Fader says, "the Portland band with the best name and the summer’s prettiest album (out August 20th via Partisan), shared “Dream the Dare” earlier today. If you feel like your life is stuck in a raincloud, you should listen, like eight times in a row, and I bet it’ll be your Monday sunbeam. Their debut EP last year was a favorite, but these new songs are putting Pure Bathing on another level entirely."

Fat Freddy's Drop
"Russia"
'Blackbird'
The Drop, 2013
Note: Clash Music says, "A decade of touring has earned New Zealand collective Fat Freddy's Drop a reputation as a live act of the highest calibre, the Wellington-based seven-piece celebrated for its improvised, marathon jam sessions. Taking these sessions into the lab to craft them into polished studio albums is the outfit’s penchant. Essentially, they do it the old-fashioned way – and it has paid off massively. ‘Blackbird’ is their third full-length studio LP, on which hip-hop, soul, jazz, reggae and funk blend effortlessly."
(More Info)

Weed
"Silent Partner"
'Deserve'
Couple Skate, 2013
Note: KEXP says, "Vancouver band Weed’s soon to be released debut LP, Deserve, is full of feedback-laden, thickly layered fuzz -- and thankfully not the stoner drone rock or hippy jam band their name might imply. Even more thankfully, the young musicians have listened to as much My Bloody Valentine as Nirvana..." That's BC, not WA.

Washed Out
"Don't Give Up"
'Paracosm'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: "We’d like to issue a big thank you to Washed Out’s Ernest Greene for steadily leaking nostalgia-inducing jams from his upcoming Paracosm just in time for us to drive around blasting them in the beautiful summer weather. We definitely owe him a big thanks for “Don’t Give Up,” the record’s next single, which premiered on BBC Radio 1 yesterday – it’s a sweeping, slow-burning cut with endless layers of tribal percussion and some woozy synth swirls; we’re going to blast it on repeat on the beach this weekend. Check it out - Paracosm is out August 13."

Pretty Lights
"Press Pause"
'A Color Map of the Sun'
8 Minutes and 20 Seconds, 2013
Note: Colorado-based Derek Vincent Smith, aka Pretty Lights, just dropped a deuce! Hey Reverb says, "On Soundcloud, Pretty Lights’ Derek Vincent Smith calls his latest album a “multi-medium map of my mind and self.” It’s a description that makes “A Color Map of the Sun” sound like some kind of dream therapy rather than an album. And a dream is really the closest analogy to describe the album — a collage of sounds that create an overall experience without articulating any specific information or purpose."
(More Info)

Shelby Earl
"Sea Of Glass"
'Swift Arrows'
self-released, 2013
Note: KEXP says, "Swift Arrows, produced by fellow Seattle artist Damien Jurado, is evidence of Earl’s confidence in doing things her way. While it’s not all rainbows and puppies on Swift Arrows, Earl does weave a lighter tone into the album. Without losing the reflective feel of her first album..."
(More Info)

The Ericksons
"Animal" single
self-released, 2013
Note: After their third full-length, which we heard from back on Episode043, the Minneap sister return with a new single. "In their new single, Animal, The Ericksons introduce electro-pop instrumentation to their mystical songwriting and ethereal vocal harmonies. The Minneapolis-based, indie-folk duo gives their arresting sound a fun new twist through their collaboration with the production team of Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), and Ben Lester (Field Report, A.A. Bondy, S. Carey). This inventive new single evokes light, hope, and strength, and represents an evolution of sound from The Ericksons that will be enjoyed this summer and beyond."

Beck
"I Won't Be Long" single
Fonograf, 2013
Note: Nice, we love adding major artists to the PUTV roster! Rolling Stone says, "Kim Gordon lends her voice to a new 15-minute extended version of Beck's recently released tune "I Won't Be Long." The song, which played on Seattle radio station on 107.7 The End, features the former Sonic Youth bassist adding breathy spoken-word vocals to the dreamy track... After releasing the sheet-music collection Song Reader last year, Beck recently announced two follow-up albums, one of which will be acoustic. "I Won't Be Long" and "Defriended" won't appear on either. "I Won't Be Long" will be released on limited-edition 12-inch vinyl that includes the 15-minute extended version." I don't think Kim's on this shorter version though... :(

The Shivas
"Swimming With Sharks"
'Whiteout!'
K, 2013
Note: Our Pacific Northwest closer this week is from right here in Portland (at least, that's what they say on their Twitter account). KEXP says, "it’s true that like their fellow Vancouverans (though BC rather than WA) Weed, The Shivas smartly thread other sources through the familiar fabric of their sound, creating a unique pattern, with a bit of western jangle here, a wisp of woozy psychedelia there, plus other touches of doo-wop, twee pop, pop punk, surf rock, even psychobilly..."

RUSH: tightest 3-man band ever, with excellent lyrics full of allusion from well-read composers. Love 'em!
