♬Liner Notes♬: Welcome back to another week of exciting new music! This week we're stoked to get from Tricky, Queens Of The Stone Age, CRVRCHES, Charms, Gaudi and much more... Let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

Gaudi
"Planet X"
'In Between Times'
Six Degrees, 2013
Note: We'll begin this week with a sweet instrumental from a new album that features guest appearances from The Orb, Lee "Scratch" Perry and more! Remix Nation says, "In Between Times could be one of his most diverse albums yet. Legends like Lee Scratch Perry are scattered across the album and add diversity. Gaudi’s music brings listeners into a trance that takes them on a journey. The heavy thumping background bass-lines create rhythm while anything from bongos to violins provide a stable melody."

Tricky
"Nothing's Changed" (w/ Francesca Belmonte)
'False Idols'
False Idols/Studio !K7, 2013
Note: Soundblab says, "Tricky's new album has been touted as a sequel of sorts to his legendary debut, Maxinquaye. You can see why. Many tracks have the same loping, stoned paranoiac vibe which Tricky all but patented on that record... standout tracks include...the down-tempo, orchestral chill and trip hop vibes of 'Nothing's Changed'" This is Tricky's 10th studio album but - to this day - 'Maxinquaye' maintains its desert island disc status with me. It's synonymous with 1995 for me. Me and my gf (at the time) even made a road trip to Lollapalooza '97 in Charlotte specifically to go see Tricky!

Generationals
"Spinoza"
'Heza'
Polyvinyl, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says, "Indie bands namedropping philosophers is nothing new-- people still call it "college rock" for a reason. Neither is the employ of irony, and Generationals appear to be double-dipping on "Spinoza," the New Orleans duo's lead single from their third album, Heza... the zippy melodies and clean electric strums of "Spinoza" recalls the Drums' pretty vacancy, balancing out their ostensibly cerebral ambitions."
(More Info)

Bibio
"A Tout L'Heure"
'Silver Wilkinson'
Warp, 2013
Note: Resident Advisor says, "Anyone anxiously awaiting the upcoming Boards Of Canada album, and who imagines the duo to be utterly peerless, would do well to investigate Bibio. Stephen Wilkinson's music has about it the same Polaroid blur as BoC's, indistinctly reminiscent of past halcyon days, distorted and recoloured by memory. Silver Wilkinson is his first album since 2011's Mind Bokeh. The term "bokeh" is a Japanese word for the defocussed area of a photograph—an area he continues to explore on Silver Wilkinson. "

IG88
"Drowning In Pinwheels" (w/ Bed Of Stars)
'Breathing Suit'
Nueva Forma, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Named partially for a character in Star Wars and partially for his birth year, Seattle-based producer Branden Clarke makes lush, atmospheric electronic music under the moniker IG88... As its sunny title suggests, “Drowning In Pinwheels” is filled with luminescent tones that arrive just in time for long summer nights."

Eleanor Friedberger
"Stare At The Sun"
'Personal Record'
Merge, 2013
Note: Pretty Much Amazing says, "The Fiery Furnaces’ Eleanor Friedberger is one of the best lyricists in the game, which is part of why I’m still spinning her excellent 2011 record Last Summer, an exhaustive account of the first summer she spent in New York as a young woman. She’s following that up with Personal Record, which is apparently (and ironically) less autobiographical. Its first single is “Stare at the Sun,” which might be familiar to you if you’ve seen Eleanor live within the last year or so. It’s a bubbly, driving, effortless guitar pop track that sounds like its title, grounded in Eleanor’s distinctive voice and wordy, smart lyrics."

Big Black Delta
"The Zebrah"
'Big Black Delta'
Masters of Bates, 2013
Note: Vita says, "Severing his drab-rock roots, former Mellowdrone main man Jonathan Bates has gone electro with his new gig. Released in April, Big Black Delta’s self-titled album runs the synthesized spectrum from cosmically ambient to Crystal Castles-do-Depeche Mode thrusters. At times danceable and darkly soothing, the 13-track treat is a compelling electronic pop tour. In the studio, BBD is pretty much Bates and a laptop, but the past M83 touring member brings dueling drummers on the road."

Stripmall Architecture
"Suburban Reverb"
'Suburban Reverb'
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Suburban Reverb is the third full-length album produced by...a band comprised (mostly) of Rebecca and Ryan Coseboom. Inspired by British and German electronic music (and “angry, angry birds”, according to their Facebook page), the duo is memorable for their energetically dissonant music and their delicately pretty vocals... Do not adjust your stereo. The drama-soaked sounds coming from Stripmall Architecture’s “Suburban Reverb” are intentional and provocatively owned."

CHVRCHES
"Recover"
'Recover' EP
Glassnote, 2013
Note: Featuring a former member of Aereogramme? Whoa, they rocked my skull!" No Ripcord says, If you haven’t heard of CHVRCHES, get excited. This Glaswegian outfit has left everyone salivating, and for good reason. The last time a new artist has gotten me so energized was M.I.A.... CHVRCHES is best described as synth-pop, maybe electro-pop, but definitely and inexplicably not derivative of the 80s style they’ve magically transformed. They’re as much The Knife as they are Depeche Mode as they are Purity Ring. The music is the aural equivalent of a flashing neon sign or a shimmering sequined gown. They sound like everything but are comparable to nothing. It’s absolutely immersive."

Queens of the Stone Age
"The Vampyre of Time and Memory"
'...Like Clockwork'
Matador, 2013
Note: The band that has been inescapable this week as they unseat Daft Punk from the top of the pops, the reviews are stellar across the board and I even saw they did an hour-long 'Live On Letterman' gig (and look, now there they are on 'Later... With Jools Holland'!) - it's the return of the mighty QOTSA! "Josh Homme almost died. Actually, he did die…for a brief moment. While on an operating table receiving knee surgery, undisclosed complications nearly took his life... The Queens of the Stone Age frontman cites this event as a key inspiration for …Like Clockwork, the band’s sixth studio album. Incapacitated and unable to “get up” for four months following the operation, he had a spiritual awakening of sorts... “The Vampyre of Time and Memory” was Homme’s first post-surgery composition."
(More Info)

Charms
"Wartime"
'Hillary' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Charms bring a brightness to the Seattle garage rock scene. Their fuzzy tunes have a uniquely jangling nature to them, keeping things upbeat and depending more on complex melody and bright energy than grit and gristle like many of their garage counterparts... “Wartime” is the cream of the crop here, though. A bright guitar hook drives the tune forward, only ever building momentum over the track’s two and a half minutes."
(More Info)

Taj Raj
"Romani"
'Fine Hearts Alive' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Minnesnowta Music says that "With a new alt-country sound, Taj Raj are set to release their album “Fine Hearts Alive” at the Turf Club June 1st. This new sound fits the group perfectly as they pay tribute to their Midwestern roots with some very folksy and light-hearted tracks highlighted by the song “Romani.”"
(More Info)

Big Eyes
"Nothing You Could Say"
'Almost Famous'
Grave Mistake, 2013
Note: And finally, our Pacific Northwest closer via KEXP this week "have been rocking the Seattle scene for a couple years now... ["Nothing You Could Say"] kicks things off with a straightforward and unfaltering bang. The track is a vintage rock jam, showcasing some really excellent counterpoint between the guitar and bass lines."
