from danger room: U.S. officials don’t like calling what’s going on in Pakistan a war. But the US-led conflict, whatever name you give it, has never been this violent. The drone component of the campaign hit a new high over the weekend — 20 attacks in September alone, killing as many as 101 people. Today, NATO confirmed that a pair of its helicopters, based in Afghanistan, chased militant suspects across the border. 53 more are now reported dead.

In the Beltway, it’s considered bad form to refer to the Pakistan “war.” The term is too loaded with geopolitical baggage, and raises too many questions about who should be overseeing the conflict at home. But when NATO helicopters kill more than four dozen in Pakistan in a single day; when the CIA-led drone campaign hits 20 targets in 23 days; when thousands of U.S.-trained Afghans cross the border to fight insurgents on Pakistani soil; when American troops ferry aid to Pakistan’s flood victims; when the U.S. Air Force flies surveillance sorties over Pakistan; when American security contractors operate on Pakistani turf; and when U.S. Special Operations forces school Islamabad’s army in counterinsurgency (and sometimes lose troops to firefights in the process), what else should we name this multi-pronged military campaign? What other term would possibly apply?

from clyde lewis: Once in lifetime not too far away, I dabbled in evangelical Christianity. It was something I did because my original religious group abandoned me because I was a sinner and at the time played the stupid game of sinner, to saint much to my discouragement. Attending Pentecostal services was more entertaining than spiritual and I really didn’t question the sincerity of those attending. They believed in the power of God and the salvation of Christ... I am particularly concerned with this whole affair with Delaware Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell. Once again we have a born again Christian who pulls a Mike Warnke by saying to Bill Maher on his TV show in 1999, that she once dabbled in witchcraft. She made mention of this around the time “The Blair Witch Project” was in theaters.

from nytimes: Sweden became the latest European nation to see a breakthrough for populist right-wingers Sunday, when the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats won their first parliamentary seats in elections that failed to produce a clear outcome.

The prime minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, who led an alliance of four parties, claimed victory and is almost certain to become the first leader from Sweden’s center-right since World War II to serve two consecutive terms...

Unlike nearby Denmark and Norway, where populist anti-immigration parties have been successful for years, voters here had never before given the Sweden Democrats sufficient support to overcome the 4 percent threshold they needed to reach Parliament. The election authority said the Sweden Democrats won 5.7 percent of the vote and 20 seats...

With its high taxes and a generous welfare system, Sweden has been regarded by many outsiders as a bastion of liberalism and tolerance — immune from far-right politics.

However the integration of minorities within this nation of 9.4 million people has become a growing preoccupation, especially in cities that have experienced high rates of immigration.

Though the official campaign was dominated by discussion of welfare reform and taxation, immigration lurked beneath the surface.

from bbc: The US recession lasted 18 months and was the most prolonged since World War II, a report has concluded. The National Bureau of Economic Research said the recovery began in June 2009, with recession having begun in 2007. Its views carry weight in the US, even though there is usually a lag before it reaches a view, said BBC World Service economics editor Andrew Walker. The organisation's figures take in data beyond simply GDP. Income, employment industrial production and wholesale retail sales also from part of the analysis. The previous longest postwar recessions in 1973-75 and 1981-82 both lasted 16 months, it said.

from clyde lewis: I had the opportunity to appear on FATE Radio’s “The Other Side” with Denver and Lauren. One of the questions they asked me was what my favorite Science fiction movie was. I replied "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" with Kevin McCarthy. I explained that I found the film frightening on a visceral level. Even though it is a B-movie and would probably bore the ADHD kids of today, the psychological terror of feeling as though the earth has been invaded by an unseen alien force is a chilling thought.

from independent: Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China, qualifies as the greatest mass murderer in world history, an expert who had unprecedented access to official Communist Party archives said yesterday.

Speaking at The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival, Frank Dikötter, a Hong Kong-based historian, said he found that during the time that Mao was enforcing the Great Leap Forward in 1958, in an effort to catch up with the economy of the Western world, he was responsible for overseeing "one of the worst catastrophes the world has ever known".

Mr Dikötter, who has been studying Chinese rural history from 1958 to 1962, when the nation was facing a famine, compared the systematic torture, brutality, starvation and killing of Chinese peasants to the Second World War in its magnitude. At least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China over these four years; the worldwide death toll of the Second World War was 55 million.

3 reported cases of drug resistant bacteria in US
from ap: An infectious-disease nightmare is unfolding: Bacteria that have been made resistant to nearly all antibiotics by an alarming new gene have sickened people in three states and are popping up all over the world, health officials reported Monday.

The U.S. cases and two others in Canada all involve people who had recently received medical care in India, where the problem is widespread. A British medical journal revealed the risk last month in an article describing dozens of cases in Britain in people who had gone to India for medical procedures.

How many deaths the gene may have caused is unknown; there is no central tracking of such cases. So far, the gene has mostly been found in bacteria that cause gut or urinary infections.
Scientists have long feared this — a very adaptable gene that hitches onto many types of common germs and confers broad drug resistance, creating dangerous "superbugs."

uk & canadian troops investigated over heroin trafficking claims

from guardian: Military police are investigating claims that British soldiers have been involved in heroin trafficking in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence said it was aware of "unsubstantiated" claims that troops were buying the drug from dealers and shipping it out of the country in military aircraft. An inquiry is focusing on British and Canadian personnel at airports in Camp Bastion and Kandahar. Security has been tightened, with additional sniffer dogs being used. Afghanistan is the source of 90% of the world's opium. Some drug bosses in the country have implicated soldiers in the trade. Last year the Sunday Times spoke to one dealer who said members of the military were the second largest buyers of heroin after foreign drug lords. The newspaper was told: "The soldiers whose term of duty is about to finish, they give an order to our boss." A team of detectives from the Ministry of Defence's special investigations branch is believed to be heading the investigation into the claims.

During the gathering there will be public speakers and guests talking about 9/11 and what is being done to constructively heal after this devastating moment in history. This is in protest of the “International Burn the Quran Day” proposed by the Dove World Outreach Center and the Westboro Baptist Church. Pilato in a statement said “If you want to find a book of lies and half truths you don’t need to look any further than the slap shot 9/11 report.” Clyde Lewis concurs by stating “The 9/11 report has been held as the definitive account of what happened on September 11th, however many respected senior members of the military, intelligence services and government have expressed significant criticism of the 9/11 Commission Report and it has generated more hate and misunderstanding than the Quran or any other religious book.” The book burning will take place after the festivities and will be used to urge the public to demand the truth about the attacks and the prolonged war that followed. gadsden flags start disputes around the country

from the upshot: An Arizona man is in trouble with his homeowners' association over flying the Gadsden flag, which features a coiled rattlesnake and the words "Don't Tread on Me." The flag has been adopted by members of the tea party movement for its association with the American Revolution, but Andy McDonel tells the New York Times that he has hung the flag from his roof simply for its historical significance.

Arizona has a state statute that allows Arizonans to fly "the Stars and Stripes, the state flag, flags representing Indian nations as well as the official flags of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard," the Times reports.

McDonel's homeowners' association is strictly interpreting that law to ban the flying of any other flags, including the Gadsden. The American Civil Liberties Union is defending McDonel, saying the homeowners' group is taking too strict a view of the statute and restricting McDonel's right to free speech. McDonel is chronicling his struggle on a blog, where he is asking for donations for a potential legal battle. McDonel isn't the only person to run into a dispute over the historic flag.
