banks financing mexico gangs admitted in wells fargo deal

banks financing mexico gangs admitted in wells fargo dealfrom bloomberg: Just before sunset on April 10, 2006, a DC-9 jet landed at the international airport in the port city of Ciudad del Carmen, 500 miles east of Mexico City. As soldiers on the ground approached the plane, the crew tried to shoo them away, saying there was a dangerous oil leak. So the troops grew suspicious and searched the jet.

They found 128 black suitcases, packed with 5.7 tons of cocaine, valued at $100 million. The stash was supposed to have been delivered from Caracas to drug traffickers in Toluca, near Mexico City, Mexican prosecutors later found. Law enforcement officials also discovered something else.

The smugglers had bought the DC-9 with laundered funds they transferred through two of the biggest banks in the U.S.: Wachovia Corp. and Bank of America Corp., Bloomberg Markets magazine reports in its August 2010 issue.

This was no isolated incident. Wachovia, it turns out, had made a habit of helping move money for Mexican drug smugglers. Wells Fargo & Co., which bought Wachovia in 2008, has admitted in court that its unit failed to monitor and report suspected money laundering by narcotics traffickers -- including the cash used to buy four planes that shipped a total of 22 tons of cocaine.

The admission came in an agreement that Charlotte, North Carolina-based Wachovia struck with federal prosecutors in March, and it sheds light on the largely undocumented role of U.S. banks in contributing to the violent drug trade that has convulsed Mexico for the past four years.

west virginia's robert byrd, longest-serving congressman, dead at 92

west virginia's robert byrd, longest-serving congressman, dead at 92from cnn: West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, the self-educated son of a coal miner who became the longest-serving member of Congress, died early Monday at age 92, the senator's office said.

Byrd, a nine-term Democrat, was known as a master of the chamber's often-arcane rules and as the self-proclaimed "champion of the Constitution," a jealous guardian of congressional power.

His speeches were laced with references to poetry and the Greek and Roman classics, often punctuated by the brandishing of his pocket copy of the national charter.

He was also known as the "King of Pork," using top positions on the Senate Appropriations Committee to steer federal spending to his home state -- one of the nation's poorest.

Byrd relished the title.

"Pork, to the critic, is service to the people who enjoy some of the good things in life, and I've been happy to bring to West Virginia the projects to which they refer. I have no apology for it," he said.

"When I am dead and am opened they will find West Virginia written on my heart."

He was an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq, calling his 2002 vote against a "blind and improvident" authorization of military action the proudest moment of his career.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin - a Democrat - has the power to appoint a replacement for Byrd, whose current term is set to expire in 2013.

When Byrd entered Congress in January 1953, a postage stamp cost 3 cents and American kids were clamoring for a new toy called Mr. Potato Head. Harry Truman was president, Winston Churchill was Britain's prime minister, and Josef Stalin was still the Soviet Union's leader.

The West Virginia Democrat was the longest-serving member of the Senate. He died Monday at 92. The 1978 "Mountain Fiddler" album features Byrd performing old-time and bluegrass songs on fiddle, along with Country Gentlemen band members Doyle Lawson on guitar, James Bailey on banjo, and Spider Gilliam on bass. County Records owner Dave Freeman says the reissue project had been in the works for about 18 months. The CD will be available nationally July 27.

uss harry truman just off iran, as israel plots imminent tehran raid

uss harry truman just off iran, as israel plots imminent tehran raidfrom zero hedge: As we first reported last week, in an article that was met with much original skepticism, the Pentagon has now confirmed that a fleet of 12 warships has passed the Suez Canal, and is now likely awaiting orders to support the escalation in the Persian Gulf. The attached image from Stratfor shows the latest positioning of US aircraft carrier groups as of June 23: the USS Harry Truman (CVN-75) is now right next to USS Eisenhower (CVN 69), both of which are waiting patiently just off Iran.

As for the catalyst the two carriers may be anticipating, we provide the following update from the Gulf Daily News where we read that Israel may be on the verge of an attack of Iran, with an incursion originating from military bases in Azerbaijan and Georgia...

We caution readers to take this news with a grain of salt as the Gulf Daily News' sister publication, Akhbar Al Khaleej, has a slightly less than stellar credibility rating. Then again, this is what some, Breaking News Online most notably, said about last week's carrier news, urging readers to ignore it.

ground zero: the pledge of a grievance

thanks to zero point radio for new ground zero archives!
from clyde lewis: You submit to authority and you don’t even know why. You just do it, without question. Because you know what happens when you question. You are either shot or tased. Then hauled into the system, fingerprinted and held in containment until they can figure out what to do with you. You hear what you are charged with, and they love to tack on to your charges things that you weren’t even a part of. That sets your bail higher and your jail time longer. Even if they find you are found to be innocent and are set free you still have to wait for them to hand file your request for release. That is because they don’t see you as a person. They see you as a name on a peace of paper with a social security number. You are a statistic on a census. But that’s America: love it or leave it, right?

toronto police rough up journalists, arrest peaceful protesters at g20

toronto police rough up journalists, arrest peaceful protesters at g20from raw story: Reporters covering the G20 summit in Toronto say they were the target of police violence overnight, as riots blamed on anarchist groups left four police cars burning in the financial district and resulted in the arrests of some 150 people.

"A newspaper photographer was shot with a plastic bullet in the backside, while another had an officer point a gun in his face despite identifying himself as a member of the media," reported the Canadian Press news agency. The agency did not say if it was its own reporters who were targeted.

In a remarkable series of Tweets early Sunday morning, journalist Steve Paikin of public broadcaster TV Ontario said he witnessed "police brutality" against a reporter and the arrests of peaceful demonstrators.

"I saw police brutality tonight. It was unnecessary. They asked me to leave the site or they would arrest me. I told them I was doing my job," he Tweeted.

judge dismisses many claims in 9/11 lawsuitsfrom nytimes: A federal judge in Manhattan who was criticized by families of victims of 9/11 for taking too long to decide motions in lawsuits they had filed has handed down a ruling dismissing claims made against many of the defendants. The judge, George B. Daniels of Federal District Court, has overseen a group of lawsuits filed in the wake of the attacks. The suits sought to hold charities, financial institutions and individuals responsible for providing money and other support to Al Qaeda.

ground zero: creating a new world without us

thanks to zero point radio for new ground zero archives!
ground zero: creating an new world without usfrom clyde lewis: It seems that lately many of the possible terror threats that lurk in the shadows are being accompanied by so-called sophisticated “internet threats” that work in tandem to produce some sort of wide spread breach of a network grid. The internet spins a threat and people will either believe it with great zeal or dismiss it much to their own ignorance. We are beginning to see many phantom stories that indicate probable outcomes..

are drones coming to US skies?

faa under pressure to open US skies to drones
are drones coming to US skies?from allgov: It likely is just a matter of time before unmanned aircraft, including the type being used in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, are flying over America’s friendly skies. State and federal officials, especially the Department of Homeland Security, are pressuring the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to allow pilotless planes of all sizes to move through U.S. airspace in order to carry out a variety of missions.

Border patrol operations already are using Predators to help monitor areas near Mexico, and homeland security officials want to expand this use to guard the border with Canada and spot drug smugglers off American coastlines. The ability of the pilotless aircraft to fly up to 20 hours at a time makes them attractive to law enforcement.

Other proponents of drones include tornado researchers who want to send them into storms to gather data; energy companies seeking to monitor pipelines; and police pursuing suspects in cars.

The FAA has been at work since 2006 on plans to allow unmanned aircraft to fly over the U.S. Officials in the Department of Defense have accused FAA officials of dragging their feet, but the agency insists it’s erring on the side of safety.

I think industry and some of the operators are frustrated that we’re not moving fast enough, but safety is first,” Hank Krakowski, FAA’s head of air traffic operations, told the Associated Press. “This isn’t Afghanistan. This isn’t Iraq. This is a part of the world that has a lot of light airplanes flying around, a lot of business jets.”

US identifies vast riches of minerals in afghanistan

US identifies vast riches of minerals in afghanistanfrom nytimes: The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys.

ground zero: slaughter gate

thanks to zero point radio for new ground zero archives!
ground zero: slaughter gatefrom clyde lewis: It is always difficult to end a Ground Zero radio show with unfinished business. That is exactly what happened when I tried to explain the fictitious predictive programming piece called “Black Jack.” While most of what I talked about sparked a flood of calls there was one e-mail I received that I couldn’t quite figure out.

The e-mail spoke of Pegasus the white horse and Cerberus the three headed dog who stands guard at the gates of hell. I read it on the air to see if anyone saw the significance. I said to everyone that I should get home to find out what this e-mail was about.

The e-mail was titled, “White Vans. Pale Horse, Pegasus. Black Jackal, Cerberus.” It talked about a website that explained that there is some sick symbolism being used to suggest that the BP oils ill disaster was a false flag attack on the United States. There was a link to this headline: “Cerberus: Guarding the Gates of Hell – DynCorp, Pegasus, BP, Goldman Sachs – Gulf Oil Disaster Planned.”

Coincidentally this e-mail came to me while I was talking about the Denver airport and the arrival of a seven ton statue of Anubis, the Egyptian God of death that now stands guard over the controversial airport.
